[He glanced up from his spot on the floor, unamused.]

Why wouldn't I?

"... Do you think it wise, considering your current condition?"

[The lifted eyebrow and the hard glint in his dark eyes said his thoughts completely.

Did he really have to say it?

It's lying. That's all they'll ask of me, and I can do that as well as I can breathe.

"... I was not present, when your care and well-being was a subject of discussion, but I'm given to understand that you are not meant to leave the village, to make sure you did not overextend yourself?"

[The voice is still not harsh or accusatory, but gentle, as if he were simply providing a quiet reminder of something easily forgotten.]

It wouldn't be overextending myself--I've done more dangerous jobs under harsher conditions. I don't lead a gentle or kind lifestyle, in case you didn't get the memo.

Lying is no stress for me. Besides, Fujiko is going.

"Complications can arise regardless of the relative safety of the mission, and I do not believe your primary caretakers would approve of the decision."

[He doesn't name names. He's fairly certain he doesn't have to.]

[He disregarded any commentary about caretakers. He was an adult, and a ferociously independent one. He needed to do this.]

I know the pieces on this board. I can move them with more finesse than I could on a completely foreign board with unknown pieces. I'm not playing Mah-Jong by Domino rules here.

It's a simple job, and one with high reward.

[Disregard was, perhaps, the wrong direction to take for this one. His eyes harden slightly.]

"And those who are concerned for your welfare? Are their feelings on the matter simply part of your game as well?"

[Lupin, for his part, is eerily calm.]

You've got the wrong idea.

You misunderstand again. I am safe. This is my battleground, and I'll be with good people.

"Perhaps you misunderstand. Did you, or did you not, agree not to leave the village?"

Sometimes promises like that can be temporarily lifted if the reward is great enough.

"Have you discussed this decision with Adele, or Luke?"

Did you seriously think that I wouldn't mention it to them?

[In something that was a little more than a note this time, no less.]

"I think you should have mentioned it before you made the decision to begin with."

They're both busy--and we both know what they'll say.

"Yes, I suspect we do both know what they'll say. Which is precisely my point."

[For the first time, he allows genuine displeasure to fill his voice.]

"Your behavior, Lupin, affects more than just you. It affects people who care about you. It might be to your advantage to keep that in mind."

[Eyes narrowed.]

Why do you think I'm going to steal the data in the first place?

"The data will mean nothing to them, Lupin. You know it as well as I do. Going on this mission will upset Luke, Adele, and likely your other friends and allies as well."

They'll get over it. It'll be just like home!

"They will not 'get over it.'"

[He feels a flash of anger at Lupin's casual disdain, but he controls himself.]

"If you wish to embrace your own destruction, Lupin, then so be it, but I will not allow you to draw people I care about into your own games."

[Lupin's 'casual disdain' is homesickness. He's accepted Luke and Adele as partners--he expects them to roll with it or leave him alone like his partners from home.]

I care about them too, Ben. Why do you think I'm stealing the data? I'm going to give it to Luke, and we can work on a method of replicating it here so Ami, Adele, and Fujiko don't have to be mallynapped again.

"Blast it, Lupin, these people are not your band of criminals! They care more about people than they do about your schemes."

[He draws a deep breath, to rein in his frustration.]

"... I told you I would not allow you to toy with them, and I was sincere. I did not wish for it to come to this, but you seem unwilling to be reasoned with.

If you go on this mission, I will see to it that you are not welcome in this house again. By force, if I must. You will not abuse the trust of the people I care about."

You call this 'toying around'?!

[He surged to his feet now, eyes glinting dangerously.]

Since when do I toy around about things like this? I've spent the last two months sitting idly and listening to people like a good schoolboy, wondering when exactly the nun was going to whip out her ruler and discipline me for thinking something unsavory.

Two months, Ben! That's too fucking long for a man like me! It's not 'abusing their trust'--it's getting back into the game before I blow up this house out of boredom. You know what happened back in January. Do you really want that to happen again?
