You really are stupid.]

They're both busy--and we both know what they'll say.

"Yes, I suspect we do both know what they'll say. Which is precisely my point."

[For the first time, he allows genuine displeasure to fill his voice.]

"Your behavior, Lupin, affects more than just you. It affects people who care about you. It might be to your advantage to keep that in mind."

[Eyes narrowed.]

I do.

Why do you think I'm going to steal the data in the first place?

"The data will mean nothing to them, Lupin. You know it as well as I do. Going on this mission will upset Luke, Adele, and likely your other friends and allies as well."

They'll get over it. It'll be just like home!

"They will not 'get over it.'"

[He feels a flash of anger at Lupin's casual disdain, but he controls himself.]

"If you wish to embrace your own destruction, Lupin, then so be it, but I will not allow you to draw people I care about into your own games."

[Lupin's 'casual disdain' is homesickness. He's accepted Luke and Adele as partners--he expects them to roll with it or leave him alone like his partners from home.]

I care about them too, Ben. Why do you think I'm stealing the data? I'm going to give it to Luke, and we can work on a method of replicating it here so Ami, Adele, and Fujiko don't have to be mallynapped again.

"Blast it, Lupin, these people are not your band of criminals! They care more about people than they do about your schemes."

[He draws a deep breath, to rein in his frustration.]

"... I told you I would not allow you to toy with them, and I was sincere. I did not wish for it to come to this, but you seem unwilling to be reasoned with.

If you go on this mission, I will see to it that you are not welcome in this house again. By force, if I must. You will not abuse the trust of the people I care about."

You call this 'toying around'?!

[He surged to his feet now, eyes glinting dangerously.]

Since when do I toy around about things like this? I've spent the last two months sitting idly and listening to people like a good schoolboy, wondering when exactly the nun was going to whip out her ruler and discipline me for thinking something unsavory.

Two months, Ben! That's too fucking long for a man like me! It's not 'abusing their trust'--it's getting back into the game before I blow up this house out of boredom. You know what happened back in January. Do you really want that to happen again?

"So you are, by your own admission, solely motivated by your own boredom?"

[His voice is hard and unsympathetic.]

"Take up a hobby."

Goddammit Ben!!

[He clenched his hands into fists and fought against his wavering vision.]

There's only so long that playing with filial spirits and meditating and stalking the journals can keep a man occupied!

"Perhaps you should take up needlepoint. Regardless, it does not change where we stand. If you persist in disregarding the concerns of those I care about, I will do all I can to minimize the damage you inflict."

Screw needlepoint.

[He bit out the words, his voice roughened by his agitation. Vision still wavering, he sucked in a deep breath--

exhale.]

Fine. You're aware that you and Luke can do far more damage than I can, right?

"I fail to see the relevance, but yes."

[Luke, having been in the next room, had heard the majority of this exchange. He was not pleased with what he was hearing either. He enters the room in time to hear that extremely pointed comment, and it turns his neutral expression into a frown of deep disappointment.]

The difference is that Obi-Wan and I know how to avoid causing damage. To ourselves, and to others. You plainly do not.

I'm not going to be causing any. I'd be going to get something that will help.

[Seriously. Droid sabotage. Were they that blind to opportunity?]

"You will be putting yourself at risk. Beyond which, you will be violating your promises to the people who care for you in order to do it."

Which promises would those be?

[Adele steps in not long after Luke, the shouting was difficult to ignore and had disrupted her attempts at meditation. Whatever the discussion it bore investigation. And Ben wasn't the sort to raise his voice normally- what had Lupin done?]

[Luke levels his gaze at Lupin, and without looking at Adele he answers]

He's decided to go on an espionage mission. Without consulting either of us, and I'll wager Law or Alia as well.

[He leveled his gaze right back--and discreetly refrains from saying that Law also signed up.]

Everyone would have been made aware of it before the send out date. I had hoped you guys would understand the value of what we can attain from that mission.

[Adele's gaze darts from man to man, skittering across Lupin's face as she's blindsided by a surge of cold fury. He'd promised. He'd given his word and gave it up in a heartbeat. On a whim.

Instead of shouting as she normally would, instead of laying it out and calling him a fucking moron, as he was and ought to be called, she goes still. Every vestige of emotion is pulled back and locked away behind a stern, impassive face, the only visible emotion the crackling fury in her cold blue eyes.]

You gave your word, Lupin.

[Luke's ice-blue eyes flare with irritation. He can FEEL the cold rage rising in Adele, and for an instant he began to mirror it. He hated being lied to. By a man who wanted to call himself his partner? No, he was a pale imitation of Han, for all that he played at being an altruistic scoundrel. Han wouldn't have even dreamed of breaking a promise. Luke's fist pounded into a nearby dresser, rattling the entire room]

I hate when people lie to me. Its one of the few traits I can't abide.

[He would have found a way to soften the blow and hold the conversation in controlled circumstances if it weren't for the meddling Jedi Instead he quells his own growing fury and stills his mind, his temper and tone dropping to the degree that was all ready evident in the room.]

I did, Adele. [Not going to deny it.]

And have you looked in the mirror lately, Luke? A temporarily lifted vow is nothing when compared to what you've done.

"As you wish."

[And with that, Obi-Wan bows and turns to leave.]
