[He was almost like a child, Lupin realized. He was like a boy who had fallen into the Seine in the middle of winter while on a midnight excursion...alone. Spock's shields and composure weren't fully in place, Lupin knew. The unchecked emotions and the likely trauma he had faced out in the field would have made most men seek comfort in numbers. However, Spock was in a different set of circumstances. Most men didn't have a racial bond that was shared between millions or billions of individuals, nor did they have to face the sheer pain at having most of those connections ripped asunder in the space of a heartbeat.

That lively yellow flower he encountered in the fractured desert of Spock's mindscape once more drifted to the forefront. Spock stated that they had found a 'familial bond' in the Dome, and that their minds were linked in a way that most humans couldn't comprehend. Lupin still couldn't comprehend it, but it was obviously helpful to Spock...

And, maybe, to Lupin himself.

He huffed in embarrassed amusement and leaned back against the wall. This was his price for trusting a complete stranger with his everything...even if neither of them knew better at that time.]

...I'll stay as long as you need. Hell, I can wake Wilhelmina up if you want her too. I'd want company too if I was in your shoes, though I usually find mine in a bar with a bunch of drunk, happy bastards.

Wilhelmina... will not be needed at this juncture.

[Spock stepped into Lupin's personal space and gently took hold of his wrist and lifted it up so that he could place the ribbon into his hand.]

'Not needed at this juncture,' huh?

[He grinned and closed his hand around the balled up, green stained ribbon.]

I'll say on thing, Spock. You certainly did keep your word.

[...but at what cost...

However, to dwell on such things is illogical, there was only forward while still retaining the lessons learned from the past.]

Most certainly.

[And with all the innocence of the world...]

The spare room? Or shall your own bed suffice?

[Lupin snorted with laughter-- he really was like a lost child! Laughter was better than despair, he had learned long ago. He could worry about the rest of the draftees in the morning, or whenever they came back.]

Which ever is best for you...? Man this is weird!

[He pulled the penknife from the pocket of his loose pants and pulled the ribbon taut with both hands.]

Look. The important thing here is getting you back together, and doing it without you getting hurt. If that means carrying you the long way down the mountains, that's fine. If that means you need someone to guard your back, that's fine too. Sticking close to someone when they're in trouble isn't the hardest thing that I've done for someone I liked.

[A quick jerk of the penknife split the ribbon in two. He set the knife aside and held one of the halves out to Spock.]

Here. A souvenir.

[Spock took the ribbon in hand... he stared at it for a moment before lifting up the sleeve of the yukata and efficiently tying it around his upper arm.
Once settled, he straightened once more...]

[This feeling... a rather curious sensation. Though he had already given his gratitude, it would be illogical to repeat himself.]

Here will suffice.

[Spock moves over to the bed...]

[Souvenirs were important. Though he was never much of a collector at home, Lupin noticed that he was slowly becoming a hoarder during his stay in Luceti. Amassing a collection of souvenirs was just one part of that, but it had spared him from grief at a later date. The amnesia shift, the very one that threw them together, still bothered him...

But he found his souvenir from that experiment in the little device that Spock had given him. The ribbon was a return gesture--and a selfish move. Now Lupin had something by which he could remember two people by, if their memories were erased again.

It was a small piece for Spock to start his own collection.

Lupin similarly tied his, echoing Spock's gesture, and joined him.]

...you know you don't need to worry about things in here, right? Until your Captain gets back, you're free to make yourself as comfortable as you want. No one's going to judge anything in here.

[Spock closed his eyes again... ]

I realize this... but it illogically remains a difficult concept for me. Though I can recognize that this is a conflict due to my mixed heritage, it remains... as it is.

[Spock let his shields drop as much as he dared. He had been keeping a meticulous eye on them, but now he was tired. The emotions were no longer as prominent as they were... he had the desire to relax.
Spock sent warmth and gratitude through their shared link. He could not describe how... good it was to have someone except him for who he was.]

[Acceptance was all he ever asked for in his life, even as he pushed the boundaries of legality and morality. He wanted people to accept him as he was, and take the heists for the smiles that they always left behind. All he could ever offer his friends was that same acceptance and support that he wanted. No promises anymore.

No more lies, especially to himself.]

Just take it and learn your lessons. You're in a unique position, so embrace it.

[Spock nodded...

No wonder Vulcan's strive to purge themselves of emotions, the interference served as a problem.]

Spock concedes.]

[Spock does make eye contact with Arsene at this point...]

Do not think that I have forgotten about you Sa-kai.. [There is amusement in Spock's eyes as he says this...]

[Spock eases himself onto the bed, wary of his injuries...]

[The old, sly smile slid back into place after far too long. This was a familiar game to him, one that he had played many, many times in his life. It was a refined form of keep away, though he knew that he couldn't keep it up for forever.]

I didn't expect you to, really. We can talk later, maybe try another meditation. I...

[He wasn't sure. He was treading foreign ground.

Lupin offered a hand to assist Spock in settling, should he need it. Obviously there were more than physical injuries here, but they were beyond his expertise. ]

...It doesn't matter. You need sleep.

[Spock eased into the covers and sighed lightly in relief... this was the first time he had had the chance to lie down in several days.]

Meditation would be beneficial... I have not had the chance to do so since I left for the draft. And your mind is rather dynamic... I would not pass up an opportunity to learn more about it. [Spock is amused when says this... ]

This is...a most pleasing position... [Spock seems to melt into bed...]

[Meditation might even be good for him, in the long run. There was too much time, and too many differences to adapt to. As much as he loved the chaos, he needed to find an alternative. He needed to stop resisting the tides and just bob along with them for a while.

Lupin chuckled softly in amusement at the change in Spock's demeanor. It was only when on the verge of sleep that tension left the body and the truth was revealed. Lupin likewise curled underneath the covers, still thinking himself mad for allowing these circumstances to persist.]

It will be interesting to see what you find. [He couldn't say himself. Introspection was never his style. His life was always hard and fast. Only smiles were left in his wake, and that was exactly how he wanted it.

A flick of the switch turned the light off. Lupin sank into the pillows and sheets as his mind drifted to Cagliostro, and Clarisse. The comfort he found with Spock's sheer presence, both the cool physicality of it and the parts that he couldn't begin to define, baffled him. However, questioning it was too hard for both of them that night. In a few weeks they would feel more normal, Lupin figured. They could sort the details then, when the village was calmer.]

...you warm enough?

What I find in your mind has the potential to be completely illogical, and therefore also logical. [Definitely teasing now...]

[Spock had never felt this level of comfort with someone outside of family... and yes, once the repercussions of the draft had calmed down, their situation will be addressed once more. At present, it was enough to just...be.]

Indeed, this is sufficient.

[Spock rolls over on his side, a rather human thing to do in Vulcan standards. But he found that he could never sleep until he was curled up.]

...how is your level of comfort?

[Lupin barely bit back the laughter--Spock was teasing him!

Once more, in a weird way, he had fulfilled every fanboy's fantasy. He wondered how many people at home would be jealous...]

I'm fine. Not used to sleeping with people like this, but fine.

[With a half-smile...]

Indeed...

[Spock blinked a few times... he was ready to fall asleep..]

[Lupin stretched under the sheets, taking the moment to become familiar with this new person next to him, and threw the sheets over top of them.]

Guess this means we'll see each other in the morning. Wake Wilhelmina up. Have coffee...

[He was tired himself, but he would keep rambling even as he drew closer to the comforting abyss.]

[Spock already had his eyes closed and he was content to listen to Arsene while he drifted to sleep...

After only a few moments Spock's breathing evened out, but his eyes still moved under his lids...]

[Sleep took Lupin as well, heavily and deeply. The sun would rise in a few hours, and things could be dealt with...later.]
