I have a problem and I’d like a second opinion on it. It’s not big, but it could become complicated.

-I’d promise coffee, but I have an unrelated problem with getting it. I’ll be in the barracks.


[True to his word, Lupin will be in the barracks all day. His encounter with Spock on Monday, combined with his activities from earlier in the week had finally caught up to him. Fatigue was inevitable. He had spent the better part of the last few days asleep, never very far from his new charge. The veritable plague of crows that had been set upon him by an angered god was an unnecessary incentive. He kept the windows shut, locked away the gnawing need for a cigarette that bit at the back of his mind, and tried to ignore the judgement he saw reflected in the eyes of his avian watchmen—but he would have stayed close to the barracks regardless of their looming (and aggravating) presence.

While the days spent between dreams and fleeting considerations over recent affairs had rejuvenated him, it didn't stop the inherent restlessness that was his constant foe—the core problem that would never entirely leave. The people who knew him would be able to identify the briskness of his step and the cool control with which he held every action and every word. He was distracted by a new project , one that was completely foreign to him, and was unwilling to divulge details until the proper time came.

The thief had returned to work, but nothing was as it seemed.]

I do! I think it will help for what my family is supposed to do, too. Which is revive our culture! And so if I travel and meet lots of people, I can tell them about us, you know?

I do. That sounds like an excellent way to revive and spread your traditions. You'll get to meet many new people and probably pick up a few new traditions along the way!

I'm not entirely sure how to feel about it other than the fact that it was pretty damn cruel of the Malnosso.

We're nothing special compared to your air nomads. None of us have any powers, but we all come from different countries and cultures. We don't always get along, but that just keeps life interesting for men like me. It leaves more artifacts to collect and study.

There are lots of cars--your satomobiles--and lots of roads back home. There are so many people that we live in big cities. I miss the cities, both for the sights and the sounds. I miss having so many different people around.

It was. So many were tempted by what their life could have been like had events turned out differently--

but there's nothing worse than losing memories. You lose a part of yourself.

I think I can understand that. For me, there are more people here than there are at home, and I like that but it is very different!! It is more like being in Republic City than on the island.

[Syre looks over the note, then glances up at Lupin with a smile.]

Ah, I should have been a little more specific. My apologies.

Enrollment in the Academy does not automatically mean enlisting into the war. Most graduates move on to more civilian jobs and use their knowledge to supplement their careers.

I just so happened to be lucky, in that my home village was attacked by our neighboring nation, Lunia, in the first strike of the war.

[There is a brief flicker of anger in her face, though it quickly passes.]

I know not what caused it; the apologists are claiming that the raiding party was not sent by the Lunian military itself, but an independent faction. Either way, the war still rages today.

Now... the hardest question of all. What can one do with alchemy?

[She looks almost thoughtful, staring up at the ceiling while she composes her thoughts.]

The shortest answer is: "Whatever you set your mind to." The longer version is a far more convoluted affair.

[She looks at Lupin once more, her smile returning.] Would you like a more thorough explanation?

Is the Third really necessary?

Fine, fine. I can meet you there tonight. I'm a bit busy, so I'm not actually at home...you don't mind waiting a bit, do you? It'll all be there.

[The explanation provided only inspired more questions, these on the cultural and socioeconomic status of her society. He was a curious man by nature, as the Shift proved, but his need for information was more complicated than what he could quickly write down. It disrupted the flow of conversation and shot a bullet through the mood.

Instead he noted the potential storm of questions and contained it, nodding instead at her offer. He did want to know what her society deemed 'alchemy'. It was a scientific curiosity.]

It is. You would be talking about my grandfather otherwise.

Take your time. I'll be here all day.

Well, it's a good thing I asked, anyways. Some people just kinda make that kind of thing up, right?

[And she'll show up at the barracks eventually. She's busy with other things, really, but she can fit everything she took from Lupin's workshop into one bag. Now she just has to keep an eye out for him...]

[He's laying inside toward the back of the building idly smoking his cigarette. Rules be damned, he wanted a smoke.

Just ignore the birds on your way in--they're harmless, but a reminder to him to not piss off any gods. Their anger can be as petty as it can be vicious.]

Um, hello? Lupin the IV? That you?

[Since he's the only one in the barracks, it must be, so she'll walk over to him.]

[He looked at her, brows furrowed in distaste, and held up three fingers. Lupin III. Get it right.]

Um...three seconds? Am I interrupting something? I can come back later if you don't want your stuff.

[Too bad for him that Grune's currently under her seal; there's not a lot she can do to intervene at the moment.]

All right. Are you a little busy this week?

It was pretty annoying. My card offered nothing helpful besides I liked weapons, and, it reminded me I had a turtle. Other than that, it said I was engaged and that a mountain receives more attention than me. So, I spent three days trying to find my fiancé to no success since he isn't real.

It didn't really impact anything, but it has made me annoyed and confused. Just what does receives less attention than a monument mea anyways?

[Daisy was not affected by the experiment. She didn't know why. perhaps even the Malnosso considered it to be useless on her. Either way... she had prepared herself in case it happened.

Everyone else suffered for it. She was tired from maintaining some of them, but she kept her memories.

As Lupin remains in the Barracks, a familiar voice mutters.]

Is everything now in order, sir?

[Lupin glanced over at Daisy's voice, welcoming the distraction from his compulsion to just light up his cigarette regardless of being indoors. Her haunted tone of voice struck him, like it had in April when everyone's memories had been similarly affected. He nodded--he was fine, but he wondered just how Daisy was doing.

He wrote out a note and held it out for her:]

You don't need to call me 'sir'. I'm fine, everything is fine.

Are you okay?

[Lupin snorted in amusement when he read Tenten's reply.]

wow! the Malnosso were trying to troll you!
