I have a problem and I’d like a second opinion on it. It’s not big, but it could become complicated.

[True to his word, Lupin will be in the barracks all day. His encounter with Spock on Monday, combined with his activities from earlier in the week had finally caught up to him. Fatigue was inevitable. He had spent the better part of the last few days asleep, never very far from his new charge. The veritable plague of crows that had been set upon him by an angered god was an unnecessary incentive. He kept the windows shut, locked away the gnawing need for a cigarette that bit at the back of his mind, and tried to ignore the judgement he saw reflected in the eyes of his avian watchmen—but he would have stayed close to the barracks regardless of their looming (and aggravating) presence.

While the days spent between dreams and fleeting considerations over recent affairs had rejuvenated him, it didn't stop the inherent restlessness that was his constant foe—the core problem that would never entirely leave. The people who knew him would be able to identify the briskness of his step and the cool control with which he held every action and every word. He was distracted by a new project , one that was completely foreign to him, and was unwilling to divulge details until the proper time came.

The thief had returned to work, but nothing was as it seemed.]

Now, here is where most people get... a little lost.

In alchemy, there is a focus. This focus is made up of an array, which guides the energy, and the runes within it, which 'tell' the energy what its functions are.

The most common array shape is a circle, in which several other shapes are inscribed. However, arrays different from individual to individual in terms of their complexity; my own arrays are mostly circular, with a pair of unique ones for more pressing circumstances.

[She pauses again, allowing Lupin some time to take this all in.]

[He compromised by lowering her just enough for her toes to brush the ground, his eyes locked on hers in his honest delight.]

[Again, his voice betrayed him as the words were mouthed soundlessly. Fujiko, as skilled a con-artist as he, should have been able to understand.]

[Lupin thought about her words for a moment before he found an analogy. Though he wasn't skilled in any form of magic, as his attempts at contacting the local spirits had taught him, there was one spell that was simple enough for even him. He fished a stub of white chalk from his pocket and recalled the trick he learned from Harry Dresden.

He drew a simple circle out on the floor between them, his thoughts focused on the intention to protect rather than on the mechanics himself. The final step, a small sacrifice that only the individual could make, was stayed momentarily. Lupin returned his gaze up to Syre and tapped just outside of the circle for emphasis.

[She leans her head against his chest, unable to really keep looking him in the eyes at that. It's truly almost too intense to take. Either one of them or the other, was missing just one less mask than usual. It wasn't much, and for all her words, to anyone else, it really wouldn't mean much, but she knew what it meant for them, and he knew what it meant and to say that much out loud was almost too intimate. Too intense. It was like fire, warming and exciting, but still, she didn't want to get burned either.]

Don't make such a big deal of it silly. It's just exhausting watching you run around to all the different places, okay? And I don't want to have to run all the way out to cornfields or whatever ever again.

[Some masks Fujiko couldn't bring herself to lose. A lie wrapped around a truth within a different lie and misleading implications everywhere. Their dance moved ever on, but it was still another step forward at least.]

[Her feet returned to solid ground, only so Lupin could write a note. It was absurdly intimate, this 'conversation', but his means of communication were heavily limited for the moment. The weight of her head on his chest and the nonchalant lilt in her tone were enough for him...for now.

It was their old dance. It was always their dance.

Lupin tapped her shoulder for her attention and handed her the note.]

There's hardly anywhere around here to run. It's too small, but that's why we need to stick close. I'll keep running, but you can always run with me.

I was actually going to ask you about an apartment soon. There's a building on the northside that looks like it will be a good fit. There is a lot of fun people who live in that complex.

[Like an old fashioned musketball--he had guns on the brain lately, as the Shift had subtly recalled Jigen's influence more than once.]

... It's sounding like one, hate to say.

He seems healthy enough from what I can tell, and Nala will help him, but frankly his physiology even from this brief examination is alien. I'm not qualified to make any final judgement on his condition. Not without much more information on what I'm dealing with.

Did he tell you anything about himself?

[Lupin sighed and quickly went through what he knew from his interactions with Spock personally and from his outside knowledge set. He was aware that his information could be faulty due to the budgeting (and rating) contraints of his source, but it was better than nothing.]

he didn't say any specific, but he has me in a strange position. there's a work of fiction back home that features him as one of the leading characters. it didn't say much about his people or his culture because it focused on the adventures of him, his captain, and their spacefaring crew.

not human, from a desert planet. very different culture. intense emotional control.

his blood is green. does that mean anything to you?

[Of all the times that Lupin wished he had been more of a fan of the show, or that he had tried harder to focus on the betamax recordings that his mentor brought for him after a job gone wrong. Recovering from injuries had set his restlessness spiraling beyond its normal levels, and it had been very difficult to focus at that time.]

That the oxygen carrying molecule in his blood is likely a derivative of hemocyanin, which is copper based, or chlorocruorin.

[Like in mollusks, anthropods, and annelids.]

It's not iron based hemoglobin that is running through there, that's for sure.

[Hmph. Oh great. He's going to be stuck on Nala until he can wake this guy up and question him.]

[Repetitive use of Nala might not even help at this point. Spock assured him that this wasn't an abnormal state, and the damage seemed more psychological than physical. Lupin pulled out a cigarette just to hold--he wasn't going to light up inside- and bit the end of it in agitation.]

that complicates things. his mother is human if that helps any.

I'm going to see if I can determine anything with my Haki. If it doesn't work, somebody with more developed abilities of a psychic nature is going to have to take a try.

[Lupin nodded his assent, though he was certain that it wasn't needed, and silently hoped that Law's skills would find some answer. The only other man he would go to in the village, the man usually at the top of his list for problems like these, hadn't attempted to speak with him for almost a month. Lupin was starting to suspect that it was a lost cause.

Though he was almost a specialist in that field, Lupin was hesitant to even ask. Too much was at stake, and he wasn't sure that he would be able to trust Luke with anything that was so personal for a while.]

It'd probably would be find in a less traveled area, like a forest or something. That's in plain sight but it's also isolated.
